LAMA, Light Aircraft Manufacturers Association

Founded in 1984, LAMA is a nonprofit national trade association representing manufacturers of light aircraft, engines, avionics, parts/subassemblies, and suppliers and distributors to the light aircraft industry and community.

LAMA was instrumental in the development of ultralight/light aircraft airworthiness and QA standards in the ‘80’s and now, 20 years later, is immersed in developing Light Sport Aircraft ASTM consensus standards.

As you may know, the FAA released the Sport Pilot and Light Sport Aircraft rule in September 2005 spurring low-cost recreational flying.

Aircraft are now being manufactured ready-to-fly and FAA-licensed for flight training, rental, and pleasure use.

The FAA and the light aircraft industry expect that the Sport Pilot/Light Sport Aircraft rule will result in the purchase of thousands of new aircraft and the creation of many newly certificated light sport pilots. In addition, it is expected that many currently licensed pilots will return to flying, using their state driver’s license in lieu of a FAA medical certificate.

LAMA expects this new rule to benefit all the light aircraft industry, and potentially thousands of FBO’s around the country.
